We use Heroku for development, staging and production environments because it expedites and solidifies our deployment process.

We are able to deploy to Heroku with a simple push of code, and take full advantage of integrations with other leading Cloud Databases, Logging Systems, etc.

The list of Cloud based services on Heroku is every expanding, and unlike other platforms, it is easy to migrate away from Heroku if so desired. There is little to zero vendor-lock-in risk.

A dirty secret is also that the pricing for services is often lower when going through Heroku than when going direct.
